Bio

Shamika Taisha Rivera is an ink artist currently based in Seattle. Rivera is a Nuyorican, born and raised in the Bronx, New York. She spent most of her childhood indoors, reading encyclopedias, dictionaries, and Harry Potter. She also spends much of her adulthood this way.

Her thirst for knowledge and love of the magical world carries over into her highly detailed artwork. Rivera combines elements of the subconscious realm with contemporary themes and issues. She considers her “circlism” work as fine craftsmanship conceived through obsessive repetition and meditation. She sees her doodles as brain vomit—an uncontrollable reaction to the world.

Translation: Misogyny is Fascism

$4800

Denise Oliver, Nydia Mercado, Lulu Carreras, and Iris Morales were part of the Young Lords Party--a Puerto Rican activist group and counterpart to the Black Panthers. In 1969, the women of the Young Lords formed a caucus to shed light on the misogyny and sexism that existed within the movement. This caucus broadened the Young Lord's vision and work to encompass the LGBQT communities.

They also assisted with creating the breakfast and lunch programs in public schools, removing lead paint in public housing, and helped put an end to the sterilization of Puerto Rican women on the island. Sterilization in Puerto Rico was so common that it was referred to solely as "la operación". One in three women were sterilized in Puerto Rico from 1937--1970 in response to depression-era unemployment and controlling "undesirable" populations in the United States.

El Payaso: Siempre Triste, Siempre Engañoso, 2019

India ink, gel ink, and alcohol ink on paper

17" x 14"

Translation: The Clown: Always Sad, Always Deceitful

From my series, "Allies & Demons".  I used portraiture to explore concepts of masculinity, sexuality, and the long term negative effects of the patriarchy.

For this piece, I did research on vintage carnival advertisements as well as the opera, Pagliacci . The use of primary colors in those vintage ads were perfect for the overall themes of anger and sadness. The shade of red used is carmine--which is the color of dried blood. The clown was decapitated and carmine suggests that this happened a while ago. This portrait represents the end of a toxic relationship and the slow process of healing.

He Sleeps on Pink Sheets, 2019

India ink, gel ink, and alcohol ink on paper

14" x 11"

$2500

From my series, "Allies & Demons".  I used portraiture to explore concepts of masculinity, sexuality, and the long term negative effects of the patriarchy.

This figure is sleeping on a bed of hot pink sheets. He appears comfortable and warm, like an fetus in utero. However, under his head is a boulder that he carries, even in slumber. He was born male and identifies as a man and there are aspects of his personality that society deems "feminine", "girlie", or "womanlike". Societal pressures of manliness weigh on him while he moves through life trying to be as true to himself as possible.

Father of All Lies, 2019

India ink, gel ink, and alcohol ink on paper

17" x 14"

$4800

From my series, "Allies & Demons".  I used portraiture to explore concepts of masculinity, sexuality, and the long term negative effects of the patriarchy.

This portrait explores the duality of human nature. One figure with two personalities. On the left, he a good listener. He is concerned for your well-being and wants to nurture and care for you. On the right, he is devilish and plotting. Some choose to see only the good parts of him and see growth and potential. Others only know of his darkness. Both are him and are true, as long as he continues to behave and make decisions in this way.
